Hmong Committee of 100 Pays Final Respect to Speaker Melissa Hortman and Family

St. Paul, MN – Members of the Hmong Committee of 100 gathered today at the Minnesota State Capitol to pay their final respects to Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark Hortman, and their beloved dog Gilbert, who now lie in state following the tragic loss of their lives.

Speaker Hortman was a respected public servant, a dedicated legislator, and a fierce advocate for equity, education, and underrepresented communities. Her leadership in the Minnesota House of Representatives left a lasting legacy, particularly among communities of color, including the Hmong American community.

“Our hearts are broken,” said members of the Hmong Committee of 100. “Speaker Hortman stood with us in times of need, uplifted our voices, and helped pave the way for more inclusive representation. Today, we stand with her family, colleagues, and constituents in deep mourning and solemn remembrance.”

The Committee expressed gratitude for Speaker Hortman’s years of partnership and support, particularly during key milestones of Hmong American progress, including civic engagement efforts, community investment, and commemorative recognitions at the Capitol.

Her husband, Mark Hortman, known for his humility and support behind the scenes, and their cherished dog Gilbert, were also remembered fondly as part of a family deeply woven into the fabric of Minnesota’s public life.

As the caskets lay in state, the Committee offered a moment of silence, heartfelt prayers, and a floral tribute in honor of a family who served, inspired, and walked alongside Minnesota’s diverse communities.

The Hmong Committee of 100 joins the broader Minnesota community in mourning this profound loss and extends heartfelt condolences to the extended Hortman family, friends, and colleagues.
