Hmong Committee of 100 Hosts Education-Focused Monthly Luncheon on 2024–2025 Budget Shortfall

Conversation Highlights Impact of School Budget Cuts on Hmong-American Students

Saint Paul, MN – August 6, 2024 – The Hmong Committee of 100 convened its August Monthly Luncheon on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at Hmong Village Shopping Center, drawing educators, parents, and community leaders to address urgent concerns around school funding. The featured speakers included St. Paul Public School District Interim Superintendent Dr. John Thein and School Board Member Jim Vue, who shared vital information about the district’s projected budget shortfall for the 2024–2025 academic year (FY25).

The discussion focused on the significant financial challenges facing the Saint Paul Public School system, including potential cuts to academic programs, staff positions, and student services. Dr. Thein and Vue emphasized that these cuts could have a disproportionate effect on schools with large Hmong-American student populations, underscoring the importance of community engagement and advocacy during this critical time.

“As a community, we must understand how school budget decisions will affect our children’s learning and future,” said Jim Vue during the luncheon. “This is the time to get involved.”

The event provided a space for open dialogue between education leaders and the Hmong community. Attendees asked questions, voiced concerns, and discussed ways to advocate for equitable funding and support for all students, especially those from historically underserved backgrounds.
